Friday Featured Class: Charms

Hi there, today we are slipping into Charms, seeing who has a good handle on the Riddikulous charm. Finding things that make you laugh can be hard sometimes... and then sometimes not so hard at all. Hehe.
Just wait till you see a few of the ways people tickle their funny bones.

Gryffindor

PurpleSnowDrop made a flower sweater for a turtle. Very cute, and giggle inducing.

PuffyGriffinClaw made a "Yoda" hat. Funny it is, I think.

Hufflepuff

boogiemonster made an adorable puffy version of a DALEK, t see a creature so dangerous and scary reduced to a squishy, huggable puff just brings on giggle fits.

Crochetnw brought a purple sheep to class...now that is a funny thought, wool we don't have to dye.

Ravenclaw

nightrae made a mustache that tickles the lip and the funny bone.

Omeletsmom brough back memories of the Three Stooges for me with this banana peel

Slytherin

loneilteaches made this cute, and giggle worthy Frog Prince.

seakame knitted chickens to "sit" on eggs. Chicken shaped egg cozy, cute and funny.

These are just a few of the amazing turn ins in Charms class this month. I recommend you stop by the class, you might get some ideas and you never know when a good laugh might save the day.

There is only a couple days left in this month, make sure you get that one class requirement in for your sorting. Remember if you need help getting an idea for a class or working something you made into a class the Knight Bus is ready to help. Don't forget partials count, and if life has just stomped all over your crafting this month, talk to AmyPC and let her know, she might be able to give you a excuse note.

Only a couple more days left if you have not got your class in yet. Also if you are one of the Proud 74, remember you have till the 29th to get out on the Quidditch pitch and score for Gryffindor.

Head Girls Interview Series Part 2- Ravenclaw

Hi, and welcome to the second in our series of Head Girl interviews. Every Thursday for the next four weeks we are going to sit down with one of the Head Girls in the Cup. One of the most wonderful things about the Cup is that we get to have fun and get to know others that are as crazy about crafting and Harry Potter as we are. We hope that these interviews provide you with a way to get to know other players and hopefully enhance the connections and friendships we all share.

This week we are sitting down with Ravenclaw Head Girl, OneNeedleKnitting. So grab a cup of tea and your latest project and get cozy while we talk to her about how she found the Cup, what she jobs she has held, what it feels like to be second in command, her favorite past projects and more.

------------------

KMNash: How did you find the Cup?

OneNeedleKnitting: Bijou3owl, a Hufflepuff, did this purely ridiculous scarf, which I came across when I was knitting the same pattern. I found the Cup through her page and never looked back. (well, mostly- I didn’t realize you couldn’t sign up during the term and when I looked in on January 1st, I actually read the rules and then waited patiently for the next term)

KMNash: How long have you been playing the Cup?

OneNeedleKnitting: Since Spring 2011, so this is my 13th term.

KMNash: What year were you when you joined staff, what jobs have you held?

OneNeedleKnitting: I joined the Ravenclaw staff as an adorable second year as Quidditch Captain and held that position for a calendar year or more before moving into a Prefect role, which I also held for ages, before being asked to be Head Girl.

KMNash: What is a Head Girl, what are some of your jobs and things that are expected of you?

OneNeedleKnitting: The Head Girl is the second in command in the House. When people want to start new threads or are confused about things or there are moderating issues, I handle them when the Head of House is not readily available to handle it. I also give input on House Staffing decisions, when the time comes.

KMNash: What are some of the unexpected trials and joys of your current position? (things that are harder to deal with then you thought, and things that are even more fun then you thought)

OneNeedleKnitting: I think the hardest part about being on House Staff in general is figuring out where to draw the line in any situation. We try to be PG, but, does that mean “crap” is offensive? This person seems to continually have the same problem, how many times do offer help before we send a PM suggesting some other resources that aren’t The Tower? Nailing down standards is tricky with a group as diverse in age, background, and country of origin as this one.

My favorite part of the position, I think, is that I invented my own badge to award people, the Bacon of Awesome. Here are all the Bacons awarded thus far. It’s a purely subjective award for something crazypants or funny (often both) that just tickled me the right way.

KMNash: You are kinda next in line for the “throne” as it were, do you think that you would take on Head of House if asked or do you think you would prefer to stay Second in Command?

OneNeedleKnitting: My reign as Head of Ravenclaw House will be as glorious as the golden dawn over the battlefield that lies strewn with the broken needles of our vanquished house foes.

Uhhhh ahem, wait, I mean, yes, I would happily serve my House as Head of House, if the Leadership Team decided I were the best candidate for the position. :-D

KMNash: What would you say is the greatest change to your crafting since joining the cup, what have you improved on the most, be it style or a specific craft or time management etc?

OneNeedleKnitting: Before I joined the Cup, I only knit. Now I can competently crochet (two blankets and some amigurumi to my name!), spin a bit, done some koolaid dyeing, and even a bit of tatting. Time management has taken a massive hit, overall :-D

KMNash: How active are you with OWLS and NEWTS and other Advanced Studies options?

OneNeedleKnitting: I have 10 OWLs, which is pretty good, and that was an average of one a term until I failed two straight (oops). I wanted to complete the set before doing a NEWT, mostly because it functions as a useful excuse to avoid having to plan during the term for a project to start in the break month.

KMNash: Do you have an OWL or NEWT that was especially hard for you to complete?

OneNeedleKnitting: Uh… the ones I’ve failed, for sure :-D. Besides that, no one in particular sticks out.

KMNash: Of all your turn ins to the cup, this term and past, what are some of the ones you are most proud of and what were they turned in for? (providing links to project page or picture would be wonderful)

OneNeedleKnitting: I once squished a quintaped, which was pretty memorable.

Oh, wait, did you mean projects specifically? I’m pretty delighted by the lab rat I made for Erulin9, one of my best friends, as a graduation present for graduation from medical school this semester.

KMNash: When you tell others about the cup what are some of your funnest memories to talk about?

OneNeedleKnitting: Hmm… I think it’s really just the support you get in Ravenclaw. We’re so positive and helpful for every situation and offer such complete sympathy/encouragement/enthusiasm for everyone that it’s hard to beat. There have been great moments- like when DrusillaWormwood made everyone into Egyptian gods- but the fact that I can report getting cheering for translation projects, therapy for a phobia, running a marathon, and family problems with my grandma speaks to how much Ravenclaw is there for you.

KMNash: Do you have any pointers or comments you would like to say to everyone about anything?

OneNeedleKnitting: About anything? ProTip: You have to push the little lever down on the toaster when you put the bread in, or it will be very slow to toast.

KMNash: Thank you so much for you time, advice and for showing us your beautiful work. Thank you for all the hard work you put in to everything you do.
-----------------
And here is where we will end till next weeks interview. Remember if you need help getting an idea for a class or working something you made into a class the Knight Bus is ready to help. Only a couple more days left if you have not got your class in yet. Also if you are one of the Proud 74, remember you have till the 29th to get out on the Quidditch pitch and score for Gryffindor.

Common Room Recap

Hello and welcome to another common room recap! This week there were 19 pages of Gryffindors (and friends!) chatting.

Jensta79 shared these beautiful views from outside her tent over the weekend. A few days later, she started joining her latest NEWT blanket, and finished it too.

Then, there was some clarification over what a Bowtruckles OWL entails.

Mio kicked off a blanket joining day, with a few updates.

It was pointed out that next term is only a few weeks away, words which brought surprise and the need for planning.

Don't worry everyone, Trevor has been found. Again. You'd think Neville graduating would have meant Trevor was lost less often on Hogwarts, but it appears not. At least he's a cute toad!

KMNash unfortunately lost her favorite yarn needle.

There's a handy post linked here that talks about what parts of a weaving project count for yardage.

Twinimama shared this adorable dragon amigurumi she made.

There was an informative discussion on how younger people playing for the Cup and how much help and guidance it would be good to give them.

Several people shared their inspiration for their screen names on Ravelry. (In case you were wondering my name, WatrPriestess, is a Sailor Moon reference because my favorite character was Sailor Mercury, who controlled water.)

Classicsjen has a handsome new family member! Congratulations!

PurpleSnowdrop added to her stash, though with the plans already in store for it I don't think it'll be there long.

Roseinstitches shared a blanket she finished test knitting for mio and plans to turn in to Flying class.

Featured HPKCHC Blog - Fiber Fangirls

We have another great HPKCHC blog that we'd like to share with you this week!  It's called Fiber Fangirls and you can find it at fiberfangirls.blogspot.com.  It's written by Jess, aka SameOldKnit, and Jen, aka jpester.

They usually post a few times a week and even have fun theme days like WIP Wednesday and FO Friday.  They were both happy to answer some questions for us and here are their answers...

When did you start this blog and what motivated you to start it?

Jess: The idea for the blog started over a year ago. Originally we were going to start a podcast, but I’m camera shy and there are so many podcasts out there, we thought we would try blogging. We finally jumped into it in March of this year.

Jen: Jess and I had been talking about podcasting, but never really started it up. We thought that we could blog first and maybe add a podcast later. We love talking about all things fiber, and the House Cup is also a common topic of conversation. We thought a fun fiber related blog would be a great way to share our ideas with others. I also like that I can use the blog as a way to share my crafting with family and friends across the country.

What types of topics do you usually blog about? What types of HPKCHC related things do you blog about (if any)?

Jess: We mostly talk about what projects we are working on. Sometimes we have enabling posts to try to promote indie businesses. When we talk about the House Cup, it’s mostly about our OWLs and class assignments.

Jen: We blog about knitting, spinning, dyeing, stitching, sewing and glass fusing. We talk about the progress on our OWLs, Missions, and projects for classes. We also share if we are doing anything special for our fellow Hufflepuffs (making items for the Hufflepuff Baby Gift Brigade, charity items that Puffs are collecting, etc.)

What type(s) of crafting do you normally do and how long have you been doing them?

Jess: My main craft is knitting. I’ve been knitting for almost 10 years. I am starting to get more into spinning on my spindle. I learned how to spin a couple of years ago but didn’t spin for more than a few minutes until last summer. I dabble in cross-stitch and would love to start sewing/quilting.

Jen: I have been knitting since about 2010. My mother-in-law taught me the basics, but I really branched out on my projects when I moved to Pennsylvania. I started spinning in May of 2013 when I got my spindle, and bought my wheel in August of 2013. I share my glass fusing as well, which I have been doing since about 2002.

Are there any new techniques or fibers that you’ve worked with recently that you found either enjoyable and/or challenging, and why?

Jess: I recently spun some BFL which I have never spun before (or knit with) and loved it. I need more BFL in my life.

Jen: I am just learning stranded colorwork. It is a challenge for me, but I love how it turns out. I am excited that there are more patterns that I can try, now that I am willing to try stranded work.

Which HPKCHC house(s) are you in and what year are you? How long have you been in that house? Have you ever been part of one of the other houses? If so, when and for how long?

Jess: This is my 7th term and I am playing in Hufflepuff. Before that I was in Gryffindor for 2 terms, Hufflepuff for 1 term and Slytherin for 3 terms.

Jen: Hufflepuff, year 3. I have never been in any other house. I am also on Hufflepuff staff in the Room of Requirement.

Are you working on an OWL, NEWT or a Mission this term? How is it going so far?

Jess: I am working on my Transfiguration OWL and a Mission this term. For my OWL, I am knitting the Adrift Cardigan out of Malabrigo Lace, doing 3/4 length sleeves. For my mission, I am knitting 70 squares for my Sock Yarn Blanket. It’s all basic knitting, but so mind numbing.

Jen: I am working on a Dr. Who scarf for my DADA OWL this term. I just hit the 50% today! I am making a pair of stranded colorwork mitts as a Mission. I am almost finished with the first mitt.

Do you have a favorite project you’ve turned in for something HPKCHC related and why was it your favorite?

Jess: My all time favorite turn-in for the House Cup would be my Dark Mark Bag that I turned in for Potions in May 2011. It was my first attempt at intarsia and a sewn in lining.

Jen: My favorite turn in would be my Ginny Cardigan that I made for my Muggle Studies OWL for Fall of 2012. It is the first cardigan that I have ever made. I have only made sweaters that do not have closures on them, so I was really nervous about the fit.

What’s your favorite part about being in HPKCHC?

Jess: Along with the amazing community of crafters and the wonderful friends I have made in all of the houses, I love being able to challenge myself. Each month I am impressed by how much I have accomplished and admire the work of all of the other players.

Jen: I love that the House Cup feels like a big online family. I have people that I look forward to talking to, and I love how supportive everyone is to each other. When I need help in real life or in my crafting I know that I will find so much love and support in my Hufflepuffs. I find that I am more productive during the term months. I am more organized in my crafting. I have already finished several Christmas gifts. I find myself spinning more, and trying new techniques. I have tried new skills that I had been avoiding because they fit a prompt so well.

One really neat fact about Jen and Jess ... they're both working on sock blankets!  Look at how beautiful these are!

Head Girls Interview Series -- Part 1 Gryffindor

Hi, and welcome to the first of a new series of interviews.

This week we are sitting down with Gryffindor Head Girl, jrf1977. So grab a cup of tea and your latest project and get cozy while we talk to her about how she found the Cup, what she jobs she has held, what it feels like to be second in command, her favorite past projects and more.

-----------------

KMNash: How did you find the Cup?
jrf1977: I found the cup through a friend (bluetofu of slytherin) from my knitting group

KMNash: How long have you been playing the Cup?
jrf1977: I have been in the cup since Spring term 2011. Always in Gryffindor.

KMNash: What year were you when you joined staff, what jobs have you held?
jrf1977: I joined house staff in my 2nd term as a pride leader, then in my 3rd term became the Quidditch captain for 3 terms before becoming Head Girl in my 7th year

KMNash: What is a Head Girl, what are some of your jobs and things that are expected of you?
jrf1977: I currently run the Gryffindor Blankets thread. In the past I ran the swap. I also sort the Gryffindors into their prides at the beginning of the term and assign the mentors for the first years. I am there to support the Head of house.

KMNash: You are kinda next in line for the “throne” as it were, do you think that you would take on Head of House if asked or do you think you would prefer to stay Second in Command?
jrf1977: If I were asked I would take on the position, but I do like my role as Head Girl. I don’t see Amy leaving anytime soon so I think I am very safe.

KMNash: What would you say is the greatest change to your crafting since joining the cup, what have you improved on the most, be it style or a specific craft or time management etc?
jrf1977: I have become quicker and more likely to challenge myself to something that I thought I would never do.

KMNash: How active are you with OWLS and NEWTS and other Advanced Studies options?
jrf1977: I have proposed an OWL every term and proposed a Mission since they have been around. Now completing them that is a totally different story, I have completed 3 OWLs, 1 Mission, and gotten to 25% on 2 other Missions.

KMNash: Do you have an OWL or NEWT that was especially hard for you to complete?
jrf1977: All of them. No but seriously the only one that was always ahead of my schedule on was my first OWL, which was my Ancient Runes.

KMNash: Of all your turn ins to the cup, this term and past, what are some of the ones you are most proud of and what were they turned in for? (providing links to project page or picture would be wonderful)
jrf1977: This was the first adult garment I ever made. I turned it in for Potions in October of 2012.

This was last Spring term’s OWL and my 3rd attempt at my Charms OWL.

I turned this in for Potions in February just this past term.

And my 1 and only completed Mission which is from last term.

KMNash: When you tell others about the cup what are some of your funnest memories to talk about?
jrf1977: My mother tends to give me a blank stare and just says well that is nice. One of my muggle friends looks at me like I am crazy but then reminds herself that at least I have something to keep me out of trouble.

KMNash: Do you have any pointers or comments you would like to say to everyone about anything?
jrf1977: Always propose advanced studies. There is no penalty for not finishing but if you find at the end of term you could have completed X but never proposed it you get no points for it. It is ok not to do ALL THE THINGS. Everyone is different and what is perfectly normal to one is completely crazy to another.Always remember to get your 1 class in a month, preferably in the early part of the month that way you can focus on other stuff the rest of the month. Dogs always look cute in a sweater/hat/legwarmers. When turning in a project, always remember a good story can get you bonus points and always include yardage as that can get you bonus points as well.

KMNash: Thank you so much for you time and for showing us your beautiful work. Thank you for all the hard work you put in to everything you do.
----------------------------

And here is where we will end till next weeks interview. Remember if you need help getting an idea for a class or working something you made into a class the Knight Bus is ready to help. Also if you are one of the Proud 74, remember you have till the 29th to get out on the Quidditch pitch and score for Gryffindor.

Featured HPKCHC Podcast

Have you ever been interested in the Master Knitter program?  Or do you enjoy listening to other HPKCHC members talk about crafts they're working on?  If you said "yes" to either of these questions, you need to check out the Mastering the Knits podcast, which you can find at masteringtheknits.com.  It's hosted by Natalie, who's known as Barknknit on Ravelry,

and Alicia (aka Lish), who's known as KnottyKnitter17 on Ravelry.

They usually post new episodes every 2 weeks and you can find them on their website or on iTunes/Downcast.

Natalie and Alicia were happy to answer a bunch of question for us and here they are ...

When did you start this podcast and what motivated you to start it?
Our first episode went live on March 4th, 2014. The motivation began because Natalie had been wanting to get back into podcasting and one day she was listening to the Twinset Designs podcast talk about the Master Knitter Program. Natalie then came up with the plan to do the Master Knitter Program and podcast about it with Alicia…she shared this plan with Alicia who agreed it was a great idea and the rest is history!

What types of topics do you discuss in your podcast? Do you have a format you usually follow or just go with the flow?
We have specific segments that we discuss each week for example, Master Status and Plan, where we talk about what we’ve done and what we are planning to do in the Master Knitter Program Level 1. We also talk about what’s on and off our needles and projects we are planning in segments called In Our Hands, Masterpieces, and Future Stitches. We include an Adoption story in our segment Happy tails, where people submit stories about their adopted pets for us to share with our listeners. We talk about our life as well in our Simple Selfie segment.

It looks like you two are working on becoming Master Knitters, which sounds really cool! What can you tell us about the program and what is motivating you to do it?
The Master Hand Knitting Program was created by The Knitting Guild Association. The masters program was created in 1987 as a way for knitting guild members to have their knitting evaluated with specific criteria and guidelines. It was designed as an education process not as a competition or contest. There are 3 levels to the program and knitters work independently through each level while building on techniques.

Lish: I wanted to participate in the program to become a more confident knitter and have more consistency in my knitting. I want to know why my knitting sometimes does not work out and how to fix it. It will help me when I eventually start teaching classes.

Natalie: I’ve always wanted to take the next step in my knitting and I never really knew where or how to do this. I had heard several people talk about the Master Knitter Program and one day I was listening to Twinset Designs and the way she described it helped push me into reaching out to Alicia to join me in taking this challenge. I’d also like to teach knitting classes and more some day, which is what started me thinking about the program in the first place. I am also hoping this will be what I need to set up my designing.

What type(s) of crafting do you normally do and how long have you been doing them? Are there any techniques, fibers, or types of crafts you’d like to try but haven’t yet?
Natalie: Mostly I’m a Knitter and a Spinner but I know how to sew and crochet. I hope to learn to weave soon but haven’t dove into that yet.

Lish: I am most comfortable, knitting. I dabble in some crochet and some sewing. I spun some wool on a drop spindle once but haven’t really gotten into it just yet. The interest is there but just haven’t been able to commit to learning. I do plan on taking some online sewing courses this summer and I am looking forward to learning how to tailor my own clothes and make some simple skirts. I’d call myself a survival sewer right now, I could sew something to save my life, but it’s not always pretty.

Which HPKCHC house(s) are you in and what year are you? How long have you been in that house? Have you ever been part of one of the other houses? If so, when and for how long?
Natalie: I’m a Gryffindor all the way! I’m currently in my 8th year in Gryffindor. I have thought about doing a term in other houses but I haven’t brought myself to request that from the Sorting Hat yet.

Lish: RRRROOOOOAAAARRRR! I am in the Gryffindor house, pride Canary Creams . Natalie introduced me to the house cup about a year ago. Since I work in the school system, I am about to enter my most productive term because I am going to have some time off!

Do you ever mention anything related to HPKCHC in your podcast? If you do, what types of things do you usually discuss relating to HPKCHC?
Yes, we started the podcast while we were midterm so we didn’t know where to start. We waited until before the start of this term and then we talked a little about the Cup and how we came to it. We now talk about where we plan to place each project into the cup or where we turned them in.

What are you working on for your OWL, NEWT, BROOM?
Natalie: For my History of Magic OWL, I’m have completed a skein of yarn spun for Bellatrix, a 50 Rows shawlette by Susan B Anderson for Lily Potter, and I’m working my husband’s colorwork stocking for Auther Weasley. For my BROOM, I’ve proposed spinning a sweater worth of yarn out of some corriedale locks.

Lish: This is my super busy time at work and I needed to cut back in other areas. This term I did not get a chance propose an OWL but I did propose a BROOM. I am working on 2 American Girl dresses and a pair of plain vanilla socks.

What’s your favorite part about being in HPKCHC?
Natalie: I love the motivation to start and finish projects. I found the House Cup right after I had my first child and I was struggling to find my mojo. The House Cup helped me focus my crafting and really helped my productivity! I get so inspired by all the projects too! I love seeing how others interpret the prompts.

Lish: COLLECT ALL THE BADGES! haha. Like Natalie, I like the motivation and the somewhat of a deadline to start and complete projects. Points and badges are motivation for me. I also love to see the talent of other house cuppers. It’s incredible how much we can craft in one month time. The inspiration and creativity are practically endless. Another thing I love about the cup is the sense of community it promotes. It’s a come as you are environment. Everyone is positive and supportive. Prides almost feel like close friends and family. I love to check in with them daily and learn more about each person in the pride.

What can you tell our blog readers that they may not already know about you?
Lish: I’m an easy scare. I literally can be frightened just by someone walking around the corner. The reaction is usually very animated. It typically involves me clenching my chest and crumbling to the ground. It happens an average of 3-5 times a day. I blame it on having an older brother that was a prankster or the fact that I may not hear them until they are very close to me. Either way, it’s sort of funny.

Natalie: No wonder we get along!! I’m the same as Lish…I can scare myself with no help from others. How funny!

Both Natalie and Alicia finished some awesome projects that you have to see.  Alicia knit all of these beautiful bridesmaids shawls!
Natalie knit this gorgeous cardigan!

Be sure to check out their podcast!

Weekly Pride Summary

A fairly quiet week in the Prides, but some good activity anyway.

The Fizzing Whizbees had some creative cloud turn-ins for divination, discussions on blanket modules for classes, and a very relaxing detention project.

The Canary Creams nearly had 100% participation in May, with 24 of 25 people turning in classes.  A darling Yoda hat was made for a baby shower, turtle outfits were displayed, and lots of good advice was given on how to do m1 without holes.

The Animal Crackers did a bunch of sewing for a class, while another demonstrated some lovely weaving.  One earned a record amount of bonus points, while another turned in her awesome 75% NEWT.   There was also fantastic news posted.

The Acid Pops got an ice cream machine for their 100% pride participation and hosted visitors from another pride, despite the risk of more fire.  They also posted some lovely items for a marauder mission.

The Exploding Bonbons contemplated the joys of teens, discussed loom knitting, and provided a link to a very entertaining song.

The Sugar Quills showed off some fun hair dying and showed that Sandra Bullock just might be a Gryffindor.  A lovely bright sock was posted, and 75% NEWT worth of hats were finished.

The Pepper Imps offered a lovely bag as a prize, posted enticing views of Colorado, and got an adorable pup to model a hat.
