Whomp! Whomp! Episode 38

Planning Podcast:
Order Missions DUE: July 22
Headmistress Challenge Due: July 17th
portkey place a Portkey you must first post a photograph, moving or otherwise, of a location at or near your home. The photo must have either been taken by you or a member of your household, but it need not be recent. For the purposes of this Challenge “near your home” means within 50 miles/80 kilometers. This photo is to be your inspiration for your project, which will serve as your Portkey.

 Classes:

 Charms-Supersensory Charm
Option 1: Craft with, spin or dye a “luxury” fiber. Luxury is to be defined by the student (silk, alpaca, bamboo, cashmere, fun fur, kneazle down…) we are looking for something with a soft texture that makes your fingers sing, not to make you empty your Gringott’s vault.

CoMC- Grindylow
Option 1: Use the colors which remind us of the lake at Hogwarts (colors blue/green) -- Ravelry approved craft
Option 2: Spin something long, light and sinewy like grindylow fingers - fingering / laceweight yarn 16+wpi
Option 3: Craft something which will help you foil the Grindylow or mermaid’s attempt to capture and do you harm

DADA- Inferi
Option 1: Reanimate a project you are not happy with. In your turn in post please include before and after images and explain what you improved in the reanimated project. -Knitters and Crocheters: This must be either a work in progress that has stagnated or an FO that displeases you. You may either frog the original or use new materials, but no projects started before the 1st of this month can be turned in please. WIPs that you actually like and wish to finish may be turned in to Detention. - Spinners: Using the same fiber blend and ply structure, try to recreate a yarn that didn’t turn out as planned/hoped. -Dyers: Reanimate a past dye project! Either overdye a failure or redo a previous attempt with new material to achieve a better result.
Option 2: Reanimate a project that you made and loved making by crafting a second version. Please provide a link to the original project page in your turn-in post (it’s okay if there are no photos of the original). Knitters/Crocheters/Weavers: re-do the same pattern Spinners: Use the same blend of fibers and the same ply structure as the previous spin Dyers: Recreate a dyeing success by duplicating a favorite colorway

Flying - Take your flying home with you
Craft something to keep you safe while flying or in the event of a crash landing. For example, you could enspell a hat to become a crash helmet at high speeds, or create a flat object that becomes a landing pad when you cast Engorgio on it. Prepare to rig a safety net by spinning plied yarn. We don’t want a weak spot in your singles to bring you crashing to the ground. Show that you are a careful observer of your friends’ Flying techniques by imitating one of their past projects. Include a link to their project in your post.

Herbology-Whomping Willow
The Whomping Willow attacks anyone or anything that comes within the reach of its branches. Option 1: Craft something you could whomp someone (safely) with. Pictorial evidence of whomping will earn you extra credit.
Option 2: Craft something to protect you from a whomping. Again, pictures of your item in use will earn you points, but stay safe in creating your examples! The branches of the Whomping Willow act like it’s arms and when damaged, the branches must be treated as if they are arms. Option 3: Craft an item for the arms/branches. Think armwarmers, wristwarmers, etc. Extra points for yarnbombing a tree, but be careful and stay safe! We cannot stress enough the importance of staying outside the reach of the Whomping Willows branches while studying it. Now you may study at your leisure, but once again, craft and demonstrate safely!

History of Magic- take a closer look at the pharmakis and Arachne
1: Craft something that is plantlike in nature.
2: Craft something that can be used for the gathering of herbs.
3: Craft something to represent Arachne. All Rav crafts, fabric sewing, and quilting are being accepted

Muggle Studies- UFO’s
Option 1 - Identify a project that may be unidentifiable - make a project that can be misunderstood and identify it’s true purpose
Option 2 - Create an item inspired by the alien in the Unidentified Flying Object - please tell us how your project relates to the alien
Option 3 - Finish an UFO - please post a before & after picture and your UFO needs to be less than 50% finished as of July 1st

Potions-Colorwork
Demonstrate your ability to “harmonize multiple colors, yarns, and/or textures in a pattern.” Explore color dominance. Experiment with multi-stranded color blending. Practice maintaining tension and managing floats. Attempt intarsia. Try mosaic or brioche or double-knitting with two or more colors. Learn to work with yarn in both hands or become adept at managing multiple strands singlehandedly. Develop an interesting stripe pattern. Weave a color gamp. Exhibit one or more stages of turning raw-off-the-sheep fiber into handspun. Any of the techniques suitable for an OWL in Potions are acceptable this month - with the liberty to work on a smaller scale to work out the kinks of your test batch before you brew a cauldron filled to the brim during an Advanced Studies examination.

*******************************************************************
Planning Part of the Podcast:

Charms- Undetectable Extension Charm
Option 1: Craft a bag of some sort for use in practicing the charm. Purse, market bag, dice bag, saddle bag, whatever. You have to have something to start with, right?
Option 2: Create wizard space by creating something that contains more than it appears. Knit or crochet with yarn held double. That’s one way to pack more in than you might expect! (For scoring purposes, your yardage for option two will be halved.) Spinners -try spinning a 3-ply, 4-ply, billion-ply (you get the idea) yarn. For the purposes of this class N-ply will be considered a multi-ply method.
Jessica~ *IF* i have time i want to make a bag for my wheel accessories... http://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/felted-spinning-wheel-bag
Allena-

 CoMC- Mooncalf
Option 1 - Create a project to help you blend into the surrounding area so you don’t scare the mooncalf. Option 2 - Create something to make a mooncalf’s burrow more comfortable since it spends so much time in there.
Option 3 - Create a project inspired by the mooncalf’s physical appearance.
Option 4 - Create a project connected to the mooncalf’s monthly appearance outside its burrow (the “crop circles,” the dances, the mooncalf’s comfort).
Jessica~ socks?! (flat feet or dancing.... some sort of tie in to those?!) or the comfort of the mooncalf. Allena-

DADA- Dark Wizard Herilooms/Borgin and Burkes
Option 1: Craft a defense to the item you studied in Borgin and Burkes. Please explain the object’s dark purpose and how your project defends against it. It might be an object described in our history texts, or one you found that has not yet been studied by magical historians. For instance, if you were fascinated by a cursed necklace, you might craft something to keep your own neck safe from it, or some mittens or gloves to allow you to handle it safely. Spinners and dyers, spin or dye yarn that represents the characteristics of the object you chose. Students are encouraged to use the item they crafted for History of Magic as the source of inspiration for their DADA homework, and providing a link to your History of Magic homework in your turn in post will earn you extra points!
Option 2: If the item you studied at Borgin & Burkes is giving you too much trouble, team up with a student from a different house to see if you can help each other with your dark magic problems. Craft a defense against the item your partner found in Borgin and Burkes, and they will craft the defense against the item you found. Please explain how you helped the other student defend against the dark magic item in your turn in post, and link to your partner’s History of Magic turn-in post. For example, if your friend from Ravenclaw depicts a cursed necklace for HoM, and you are in Hufflepuff, Slytherin, or Gryffindor, you could make a cowl to guard against that necklace. Your DADA turn in post would include a link to your friend’s HoM project.
Allena- cursed toe ring? for socks
 Jessica-

Flying - Flying by the seat of your pants...
Craft by the seat of your pants: Make a project that requires on-the-fly adjustment or where you don’t know from the start exactly what you will be doing every step of the way. Improvise! Some examples might be something you need to try on the recipient partway through to determine how long to make it. Spinners perhaps you would like to spin an art yarn. Dyers, maybe you want to use an impulsive dyeing method. Craft a pair of pants or trousers.
 Allena~
Jessica~

 Herbology-Flutterby bush
Option 1: Flutterby bushes are a popular wedding decoration in the wizarding world. You may craft something inspired by all or part of the old adage: Something old, something new, something borrowed, something blue. Examples of this might be something made from a vintage pattern or with old tools, a new pattern you made up, a project inspired by something you saw a fellow student make, or anything blue.
Option 2: Flutterby bushes quiver and shake. Craft something that has movement. Examples might be physical movement, like a mobile, or movement in color or pattern. For the latter, please explain the movement clearly in your turn in.
Option 3: Molly Weasley prepared for Bill and Fleur’s wedding by removing the clutter around her front door and replacing it with Flutterby Bushes. Craft something pleasant to improve a cluttered/forgotten areas. Need a new basket to help tidy up a cluttered coffee table? Need to tidy up the pile of shoes by the door? Craft it!
Jessica~ I have blue socks planned for tds... “something blue” opt 1
Allena~

History of Magic- Borgin and Burkes
Option 1: Craft something based on an item you would find in Borgin and Burke’s. Some examples of items can be found here. Students studying these dark items may choose to involve themselves in a collaboration with the DADA classroom.
Option 2: Craft something inspired by someone you know or suspect would be a patron of Borgin and Burke’s. Optional HoM/DADA collaboration: If you look at option 1 in this classroom, and then read through your options in DADA, you’ll quickly notice a connection. One has you studying an item from Borgin and Burke’s and the other has you defending against it! Students interested in these areas of study may choose to participate in an optional HoM/DADA collaboration, either as individuals or in pairs. As individuals, students may complete separate, related projects for HoM and DADA, and then link those two turn-in posts together when they hand in those assignments. Students who wish to work in pairs must team up with someone from a separate house, craft related projects, and link those two turn-in posts when they hand in their assignments. In either case, the links between the two turn-in posts must work, and of course you need to remember to include the connection between them in your discussion. Oh, and bonus points may be involved in this in-depth form of study!
All Rav crafts, fabric sewing, and quilting are being accepted (see post #1 for details). Non-Rav craft requests will be reviewed on a case-by-case basis. Requests may be made in the thread or via PM to a professor.
Jessica-green socks i’m making now, for opt 2 (hello Draco!,) TdS stage 1
Allena-

 Muggle Studies- Muggle Currency
Option 1. Spin, Knit, Crochet, Weave, or Dye something inspired by the colour or shape of Muggle Currency.
Option 2. Spin, Knit, Crochet, Weave, or Dye something inspired by the subject of Muggle Currency. Many bills and coins have a famous person or landmark on the face or back. A shawl depicting the Phoenix Hall from the back of the Japanese 10 Yen coin? A dye job inspired by a photo of Sir Ian Conies Ross, the person depicted on the back of the Australian $50 note? Sell it!
Option 3. Spin, Knit, Crochet, Weave, or Dye something incorporating Muggle Currency. A yarn spun with coins in it, a woven scarf with Confederate States currency -- sell it! Mimic Muggle Currency. Bills have two sides - double knitting? Many coins have ridged edges - a sawtooth edging on a shawl? Sell it! Jessica~ possibility for socks, color of money...
Allena~ lots of fun options!

Potions-Drinkable Potions
Option 1) brew up a Potion using Food Safe means (Kool Aid, Easter Egg Dyes, food colouring, food etc) and dye a skein of Yarn with it. please remember to include either a detailed description or photos of how you achieved this.
Option 2) Knit/Crochet/ weave an item with yarn that has been previously dyed with food safe dyes. 3) craft something that reminds you of summer and especially summer drinks
Allena-
Jessica- if i have to i could dye some of the yarn i was going to use for a 2colored sock for tds...

Not Very Plannie Episode 30

Planning Podcast!

 Charms- Confundo
Option 1: Create an item that is mixed up or jumbled together. Something made of multiple (at least three) pieces, parts, or colors that seemed bewildering when you first looked at it. Or craft with “non-yarn” substances. Spinners, try using multiple fibers. Dyers, try some variegated dyes that seem jumbled together or perplexing in your choices.
Option 2: Craft something that is meant to perplex, confuse, or deceive another person as to who you really are. Are you a Gryffindor, but make a scarf in Ravenclaw colors? Does everyone know you dislike oh i arachnids, but you create a little amigurumi spider to grace your desk?
Option 3: Confund the Goblet of Fire. Invent a fictional wizarding school and craft something in its colors or something inspired by its mascot.
Jessica~ felted laptop bag?! stash buster... lots of colors...
Allena- Crosswired socks (preparation for TDS) in ravenclaw colors.

 CoMC- Abraxan and Thestrals
Option 1: Create a project using or spinning the workhorse yarn worsted weight.(9-11 WPI)
Option 2: Show that Thestrals aren’t bad omens, by making a comfort gift for someone experiencing a loss or big change in their life.
Option 3: Craft a project inspired by the Abraxan or Thestral.
Option 4: To practice the required disillusionment charms create an object that has a secret nature.
Jessica~ Spin worsted yarn
Allena~ Spin worsted yarn

 DADA- Sneakoscopes
Option 1: Be sneaky! Cause our sneakoscopes to light up. Craft something using one Ravelry sanctioned craft that resembles a different craft. For example, use Tunisian crochet to create a fabric that appears knitted, or linen stitch to create something that looks woven, or chain ply your spinning to create a plied yarn that looks space dyed, etc.
Option 2: Create your own sneakoscope or representation of one. Spinners and dyers may spin or dye a yarn that represents the color(s) of their sneakoscope when it lights up.
Option 3: Harry kept his sneakoscope in one of Uncle Vernon’s manky old socks. Make a more pleasant container for your sneakoscope. If you want to keep yours in a sock, remember the rules about socks and mittens and other things that come in pairs (you must turn in two of them)
 Allena- dye?
Jessica- spin sock yarn?! or maybe dye

Flying - Broomsticks
Option 1: Knit, crochet, spin, dye or weave something that you have never tried before, or previously tried and failed, because you were/are afraid of the technique. Perhaps you’ve always wanted to try spinning yarn but are terrified that you’ll never make it work. Or maybe you tried making a stranded colorwork hat, but you held the yarn way too tight and now it might fit a baby, but not the adult it was intended for.
Option 2: Craft an item that represents a fear of yours. What’s that, you are deathly terrified of monsters you say? Well maybe a monster chunk will help you to see that they really aren’t scary at all, but rather cute and cuddly!
Option 3: Craft an item made with broomstick lace to help you get to know your broom a little better. Here are a couple of examples to help you with ideas broomstick lace scarf or broomstick lace neck warmer.
Allena-
Jessica-

 Herbology-Garden Pests.
1: Craft an item inspired by knarls or hedgehogs (think spiky!)
2: Craft an item inspired by streeler venom (think firey, acid, poisonous!)
3: Craft an item inspired by gnomes (think slingshot, or even ferret!)
Jessica~ Gnome (KAL for my nest) http://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/gnome-2
Allena~ maybe I’ll http://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/yuletide-gnomes-jultomtar--teeny-tomte

 History of Magic- The Quibbler
Option 1: Craft something FABULOUS to wear to a record company soiree to help you research Sirius Black’s alleged recording career.
Option 2: Investigate any past Quibbler article and craft something to represent your research.
Option 3: Think you’ve stumbled onto a scoop that might make a good article for upcoming issue of The Quibbler? Craft something to represent your findings and share your expose with the class!
Jessica~ Something Fabulous ?(KAL for my nest)
Allena-

 Muggle Studies
Craft a Ravelry approved project using a new-to-you technique.
Jessica~ weave a scarf if i get a loom ;P
Allena~

 Potions-
“We expect great things this term
and hard work will be rewarded,
but first you must prove to us
 the knowledge you have hoarded.
What you see before you is this;
 When one does not know what it is, then it is something;
but when one knows what it is, then it is nothing.
You know the deal, but here’s the gist -
 Craft your representation and explain.
Potions is more than about mixing from a list,
we need to know you use your Left Brain.
Allena- Shayla Myst’s test crochet scarf. (green in color like the bottles of potion)
Jessica-
